On November 17, 2009, Ontario Information and Privacy Commissioner Ann Cavoukian, together with The Future of Privacy Forum, released a white paper entitled, “SmartPrivacy for the Smart Grid: Embedding Privacy in the Design of Electricity Conservation.”
“Be a Player: Take Control of Your Privacy on Facebook,” a video prepared by Commissioner Ann Cavoukian and Chris Kelly, Chief Privacy Officer of Facebook (July 2008), discussing privacy and security issues with regards to online social networking. Issues covered in this video include identifying social networking sites with weak privacy controls, and the intrinsic risks involved in using them as well as identifying some of the protections people should be aware of when posting their personal information online, such as being able to control access to one’s profile and being able to block access to specific information, if desired.
How to Protect Your Privacy on Facebook, a tip sheet
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada would like you to check out www.youthprivacy.ca — a web site developed to educate young people about protecting their personal information when they are online. The Office is hosting a PSA video contest open to Canadians between the ages of 12 and 18; the ultimate goal of the PSA should be to encourage other young people to critically think about how their personal information is collected and used every day, and how their privacy can be compromised.
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada offers numerous privacy resources and extensive information about social networking sites and privacy, including fact sheets, articles and videos.
European Union Countries
In honor of Data Protection Day 2010, Microsoft, European Schoolnet, Coface, and the Vrije Universitat Brussel (VUB), offer educational materials for students, teachers and parents.
Under French law, an individual may request that an entity that holds personal data about him, share that personal data with him. After a request is made, the entity has two months to provide full information to the person who made the request, free of charge. In certain circumstances, the individual may then request that the personal information be deleted or that it be brought up to date.
In honor of Data Privacy Day 2010, The Association Francaise des Correspondants a la protection des Donnees a caractere Personnel, also known as the French Association of Data Protection Officers (AFCDP), is pleased to offer its first “Access Right Index.” (in English and in French). Intended to help French entities, both private and governmental, prepare themselves to respond to these information requests and to help educate individuals about their rights, the Index will provide some insight into the manner in which entities are currently complying with the law. The Index will indicate which sectors performed the best and worst in terms of compliance, and will also provide anonymous, real examples of wrongdoing and guidance as to best practices.
4th Data Protection Day: An Initiative of the Council of Europe with the Support of the European Commission. This webpage offers information about the 2010 celebration, provides an overview of Data Protection Day events in various countries from 2008 and 2009, explains the background and purpose of the Data Protection Day created by the Council of Europe, and offers links to a number of useful resources.

The Information Commissioner’s Office in the United Kingdom offers special pages dedicated to young people – increasing awareness about protecting the privacy of personal information, and a pamphlet entitled “It’s Your Information – Using Social Networking Sites safely.” The ICO also offers general tips on protecting the privacy of personal information.

The research group on Law, Science, Technology and Society of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel presents: “On the value of privacy and data protection: Data Protection Day 2010,” a booklet containing numerous articles by European and US privacy experts, academics, and government officials in honour of Data Protection Day. The booklet offers also an overview of the main initiatives that will take place in Brussels in occasion of the 4th Data Protection Day.
Other Countries offering Data Protection Resources
Norway offers the You Decide campaign – a joint effort by the Norwegian Board of Technology, the Norwegian Data Inspectorate and the Norwegian Directorate for Education and Training, intended to increase young people’s knowledge of privacy and to raise their consciousness about the choices they make when they use digital media such as the Internet and mobile phones. Different materials address the concerns of the 9-13 year old age group and the 13-17 year old age group.
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner for the Australian Government offers the private i magazine and additional privacy resources.
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data in Hong Kong offers a page dedicated to privacy information for young people.
New Zealand’s Privacy Commissioner offers “Websites and personal information” which contains links to netsafe, Hector’s world and other New Zealand privacy resources.
