Microsoft presented “Online Privacy: Your Reputation is ON the LINE” at the Newseum in Washington D.C., Knight Conference Center, from 10 am to 1 pm on January 28, 2010. Microsoft, host Future of Privacy Forum (FPF), and a variety of experts, including Jules Polonetsky of the FPF, Brendon Lynch from Microsoft, and Michael Fertik, CEO of Reputation Defender, discussed ways to empower consumers to take control of their online reputations.
American Conference Institute presented its 9th Annual Advanced Forum on Privacy and Security of Consumer & Employee Information: Protecting and Managing Sensitive Data in an Increasingly Portable and Changing Marketplace, January 26-27, 2010, at The Madison, a Loews Hotel, in Washington, D.C. On the conference’s webpage, you view a list of excellent speakers drawn from private industry, state and federal governments, the financial sector, and national law firms. In conjunction with the forum, ACI also offered an interactive pre-conference workshop entitled Maintaining Privacy and Security of Information When Outsourcing and Off-Shoring on January 25, 2009 from 2:00 – 5:00 pm.
On Thursday, January 21, 2010, Carolina Privacy Officials Network (CPON) presented a Data Privacy Day 2010 Symposium, featuring panel discussions regarding Virtual Relationships, Virtual Business & Virtual Privacy; International Issues; Privacy in the Evolving Electronic Health Environment; and Privacy Resources from the Attorney General’s office. The event was hosted by Quintiles in Durham, NC.
Northeast
In celebration of Data Privacy Day 2010, nControl and Experior Data Healthcare Security & Encryption presented a 1/2 day roundtable seminar on the morning of Wednesday, January 26th in Center City Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Entitled WHAT PENNSYLVANIA HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS NEED TO KNOW, this event focused on EMR System Stimulus Money, Data Security and Privacy.
NuTech Integrated Systems and several of its technology partners sponsored a free luncheon discussion on the new Massachusetts Privacy Law on January 28, 2010, from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm, featuring Diane Lawton, General Counsel, and Gerry Young, CIO Secretariat, from the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation. Requiring all companies that store Massachusetts tax payers’ Personal Individual Information (PII) to prove they are safeguarded against hackers, unethical employees, and entities that could do harm to their customers, the new law takes effect on March 1, 2010. OCABR offers a compliance checklist and other helpful resources.
Midwest
On January 28, 2010, the Indiana Security and Privacy Network (InSPN), which facilitates the sharing of security, privacy and data exchange best practices in health care and related industries, hosted an IAPP Privacy Day After Hours for privacy and security professionals in Indianapolis, IN at The Columbia Club (Harrison Grille—1st floor), 121 Monument Circle, from 5:30 to 8:30 pm.
Southwest and West
In connection with Data Privacy Day 2010, LinkedIn, Mozilla, and Sitejabber joined Lauren Gelman and Ryan Calo on January 26, 2010 from 5 – 6:15 pm at the Center for Internet and Society at Stanford Law School, Room 180, to discuss the relationship between privacy and company finances. Money makes the world go around. . . . How does it affect consumer privacy on the Internet? Panelists from Internet companies with different incentives and currently at different stages of monetization, as well as privacy experts, discussed how monetary considerations operate to enhance or limit consumer privacy. Arizona State University’s W.P. Carey School of Business hosted the “Celebrate Data Privacy Day” event on January 28, 2010, from 8 am through 12:30 pm at the University Club, ASU’s Tempe Campus, offering three panel discussions evaluating privacy practices in important, emerging areas: Privacy Practices in SaaS environments; Mobile Applications: the next was in social media; and Exploring Risk and Compliance Considerations for health information. The speakers included representatives from Ernst & Young, HyLo, Right Now Technologies, and the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, in addition to Mary Beth Joublanc, Chief Privacy Officer and HIPAA Coordinator for the State of Arizona, and Professor Marilyn Prosch of the Business School.
Pacific Northwest and Online
In support of Data Privacy Day, on January 28th, President and CEO of eCrypt Technologies (OTC BB:ECRY), Brad Lever, was a guest speaker on CKNW’s Christy Clark Show from 2:00-2:30 pm PST, to raise awareness about the rising threats to our privacy, online and off, share helpful information about how consumers can protect themselves, and answer caller inquiries. In further support of the event, eCrypt shared useful information and gave away free encryption software online at http://yourprivacyisourbusiness.com/, to assist consumers in taking control of their digital privacy.

In honor of Data Privacy Day, 2010, AICPA offered “Closing the Privacy GAPP: Best Practices to Protect Your Data,” a web seminar, on January 28, 2010 from 2:00 – 3:00 pm, featuring Marilyn Prosch, Ph.D., CIPP, and Nancy A. Cohen, CPA.CITP, CIPP, discussing Generally Accepted Privacy Principles (GAPP). Originally released in 2003 as the Privacy Framework, GAPP has been updated to better align with today’s privacy issues. It is designed to assist management of an organization in creating an effective privacy program that addresses their privacy obligations, risks and business opportunities. GAPP also provides a framework for CPAs to offer privacy services to their organization or clients, such as advisory services, privacy risk assessments, attestation and assurance privacy reviews.
National

“Privacy by Design: The Gold Standard” On the morning of January 28, 2010, Dr. Ann Cavoukian, Ontario’s Information & Privacy Commissioner, presented her annual symposium to commemorate International Data Privacy Day – “Privacy by Design: The Gold Standard.” The Commissioner and a distinguished group of speakers, including Dr. Kai Rannenberg, T-Mobile Chair for Mobile Business and Multilateral Security, Goethe University, Frankfurt, and, Art Smith, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of GS1 Canada, described how Privacy by Design has benefited their organizations. This practical, time-tested approach protects personal information while ensuring the functionality of technologies and business practices..
On January 28, 2010, Qartas Corporation, Philippines, in partnership with Sulit.com.ph and the Department of Trade and Industry sponsored a Data Privacy Day celebration entitled “Building Consumer Confidence: A Data Privacy Day Celebration.” The event ran from 1:00 to 6:00 pm at the Batanes meeting room of the EDSA Shangri-la Hotel. Speakers discussed data privacy fundamentals, cyber security awareness, an overview on the enabling environment for e-commerce, the APEC Data Privacy framework, and building online trust.
Internal Corporate Initiatives
Ceridian celebrated Data Privacy Day by sending out a global broadcast message that reached employees in the United States, Canada, UK, Ireland, and Mauritius with tips that will help minimize their risk of identity theft and encourage discussion about privacy in the work place.
For Data Privacy Day 2010, Royal Bank of Canada continued its efforts to promote privacy training and awareness through its privacy spokesperson, “Sam,” an avatar created specifically for raising privacy awareness and best practices for RBC employees and clients. RBC is helping to promote awareness by offering Sam’s messaging on its webpage, “Make Your Day Safer.” Through these videos and the RBC Phishing Resource website , RBC focuses on helping clients to better safeguard and take appropriate steps to help protect their personal information.
Technology Global Sales Support from Oracle in Europe have started an awareness campaign. Sales teams from various countries in Western Europe are briefed about the Data Privacy Day initiative and will be calling customers to promote Data Privacy Day and explain how Oracle can help in protecting data privacy. The goal of the campaign is to create more awareness for data privacy and better care.
Deluxe Corporation promoted Data Privacy Day throughout the organization with a ”desk drop” for each employee which will include key messages from their Chief Privacy Officer and Chief Information Security Officer along with updated Information Classification & Controls tools. Deluxe also posted an article on the company intranet focused on the theme “Digital Lives in a Networked World.” The article included links to the Data Privacy Day website, internally developed tools & resources, as well as the Resource Center on the company’s public website where Deluxe demonstrates its ongoing commitment to educating customers on privacy, security, fraud and identity theft.
American Life Insurance Company (Alico), headquartered in Wilmington, Delaware, celebrated its 3rd annual Data Privacy Day on January 28, 2010. The Alico Corporate Compliance Group and Information Security Team hosted a two-hour interactive workshop open to its Wilmington based employees. The focus of the workshop was protecting company proprietary and confidential information and personally identifiable information of Alico’s clients, employees, agents, etc.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) has integrated Data Privacy Day into its overall privacy and security awareness program. For the second consecutive year, BCBSNC claimed the entire month of January as Data Privacy Month. Activities included weekly articles on the intranet focusing on topics to help employees protect the privacy of their own information as well as our customers’ information—features include topics about the importance of encrypting business email and the pitfalls of social engineering. The Information Security team led “lunch and learn” sessions at the 3 main campuses in Durham, Chapel Hill and Winston-Salem; the topic was how employees can protect themselves and their personal computers. Also, more than 40 departmental Privacy Coordinators were on the watch to catch employees practicing a good privacy/security habit. Those “caught” received a coupon or trinket as recognition and thanks. The names of everyone caught were entered in a drawing, and 2 lucky persons received a $25 gift card.
Cisco celebrated Data Privacy Day 2010 through a series of initiatives aimed to raise privacy awareness in the work-place and at home. A white paper and a Cisco.com article, “Online Privacy: Protecting You and Your Family,” are available to help employees and customers make informed choices about their privacy as well as feel more comfortable when using the Internet. Cisco created a Facebook page dedicated to privacy, including a video on how to secure your wireless network, some hot topics and a discussion board, and a Privacy Blog with useful online safety tips. Internal websites containing privacy policies, guidelines, resources, and privacy training modules are being updated and made available to all employees. Internal corporate communications were sent out on or around 1/28 to commemorate Privacy Day.
