California
In honor of Data Privacy Day 2010, California’s Office of Privacy Protection posted privacy tips. The Office also conveyed a privacy message to over 250,000 state employees by way of their January pay stubs: “Shred it but don’t forget it. CA Data Privacy Day is 1/28. Use a cross-cut shredder to protect against identity theft, then reuse the shreds. Go to www.privacy.ca.gov for tips.”
Governor Schwarzenegger proclaimed January 28, 2010 “California Data Privacy Day.”
The Office presented an educational webcast for consumers on safe data destruction. Included in the seminar are ways Californians can ensure that their personal sensitive information, in paper or digital form, is protected when it’s time to throw it away.
Joanne McNabb is the Chief of California’s Office of Privacy Protection, which offers numerous resources pertaining to online privacy. The Office assists individuals with identity theft and other privacy-related concerns; provides consumer education and information on privacy issues; coordinates with local, state and federal law enforcement on identity theft investigations; and recommends policies and practices that protect individual privacy rights.
Massachusetts
Diane Lawton, General Counsel, and Gerry Young, CIO Secretariat, from the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation spoke about the new Massachusetts Privacy Law at NuTech Integrated Systems’ January 28, 2010 event in Boston. NuTech and its technology partners sponsored a free luncheon from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm, featuring a discussion of the new law, which requires all companies that store Massachusetts tax payers’ Personal Individual Information (PII) to prove they are safeguarded against hackers, unethical employees, and entities that could do harm to their customers. OCABR offers a compliance checklist and other helpful resources regarding the new law.
Montana
In honor of Data Privacy day 2010, Attorney General Steve Bullock and members of the Montana Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force spoke with 8th graders at an East Helena middle school about internet safety and protecting personal information in this new and growing digital world. The presentation focused on topics such as social networking, sexting, identity theft, cyberbullying, file sharing, and online sex predators.
New York
For this year’s Data Privacy Day commemoration, the New York State Consumer Protection Board (CPB) focused on the growing problem of medical identity theft – – what it is, what to look out for, how to avoid it, and ways to fight back. The CPB also launched an initiative called “Exercise Your Options,” which informs consumers about privacy options, such as opting out of “pre-approved” offers, reducing telemarketing calls by signing up for the Do Not Call Registry, and monitoring their credit history by obtaining free credit reports. In addition, CPB offers extensive resources regarding identity theft, information privacy and internet security.
Ohio
The Ohio Office of Information Security and Privacy features a number of privacy resources for families, small businesses and government agencies for Data Privacy Day 2010. West Virginia
The West Virginia Privacy Office declared January 28, 2010 Data Privacy Day, by Proclamation of Governor Joe Manchin III. The Privacy Office issues weekly privacy tips that correlate with West Virginia state privacy policy to approximately 22,000 state employees. The tip for the week of Data Privacy Day was geared to personal data and consumer protection, and included a message and a link to DPD.
Wisconsin
On January 28, 2010 Wisconsin’s DATCP – Office of Privacy Protection offered a brown bag session for DATCP employees entitled “Credit Report: The Report, the Score and the Fraud,” featuring Eric Rosenberg, Director of State Government Relations for TransUnion, LLC, who provided an overview of credit reports and credit scores and address concerns about identity theft and data privacy.
