Dialogue on Diversity presented its second annual Internet Data Privacy Colloquium in honor of Data Privacy Day 2010.  The event took place on January 27, 2010 at the Stewart Mott Home, 122 Maryland Ave., NE in Washington DC from 1:30 pm to 5 pm.  Dialogue on Diversity and many excellent panelists, including speakers from the Center for Democracy and Technology, Truste, AT&T, the US Department of Health and Human Services, the US Census Bureau, the Cato Institute, Jackson & Lewis LLP, EPIC, and Santa Clara School of Law, provided updates on privacy in many different contexts: health privacy, census privacy, social media, and more.

On Monday, January 25, 2010, The Privacy Working Group presented “Transatlantic Harmonization: The US, EU and Finding the Future in Privacy,” at the Meridian House in Washington, D.C., featuring Karin Riis-Jorgenson, Chairwoman of the European Privacy Association, and Jules Polonetsky of the Future of Privacy Forum, and hosted by Robert Atkinson of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation and Tom Schatz of Citizens Against Government Waste.  The event took place from 6 – 9pm at 1630 Crescent Place, NW, Washington, DC.

On Thursday, January 21, 2010, Carolina Privacy Officials Network (CPON) presented a Data Privacy Day 2010 Symposium, featuring panel discussions regarding Virtual Relationships, Virtual Business & Virtual Privacy; International Issues; Privacy in the Evolving Electronic Health Environment; and Privacy Resources from the Attorney General’s office.  The event was hosted by Quintiles, at 4820 Emperor Blvd., in Durham, NC, and will be held from 10 am to 3:30 pm.

On January 28, 2010, the Indiana Security and Privacy Network (InSPN), which facilitates the sharing of security, privacy and data exchange best practices in health care and related industries, hosted an IAPP Privacy Day after hours for privacy and security professionals in Indianapolis, IN at The Columbia Club (Harrison Grille—1st floor), 121 Monument Circle, from 5:30 to 8:30 pm.

CAPAPA’s ConneXions page provides a list of the many Data Privacy Day events that occurred across Canada on January 28, 2010.  CAPAPA ConneXions events are free to members and guests and offer interesting and dynamic opportunities for networking and increasing awareness about access and privacy in the Canadian context.

On January 26, 2010, the IPOL Events Series at the University of Michigan’s School of Information hosted a health privacy event featuring Deven McGraw, Director of the Health Privacy Project at CDT.  Ms. McGraw presented on the privacy implications of the health IT provisions contained in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA).   Ms. McGraw argues:  “Although the provisions were aimed at strengthening protections for health data in the digital age, they raise substantial implementation challenges and fall short of establishing the comprehensive privacy and security framework needed to build public trust in emerging e-health systems.”

On Thursday, January 28, the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) recognized Data Privacy Day with Privacy After Hours events around the world hosted by local privacy professionals.
